Awards Day

Rachel receiving her AR award.
Rachel getting awards from her teacher.

Sarah and all of her awards (you can't even see the two medals she is wearing)Sarah and her "Amazing Teacher's Helper Award"

Standing proud!

Rachel and all of her awards!

Awards Day was held on the last day of school for K-6th Grade. The girls earned several awards. I guess this is my blog, so I am going to brag about my kids! Here is the run-down of what they earned:

Sarah- Outstanding Attendance Award (0 Days Absent and wasn't Tardy)

Sarah - Teacher's Helper Award (from her 1st Grade Teacher)

Sarah - 14 points in AR Reading (most of the 1st graders only got 1 or 2 points because they just started taking reading tests in the spring. Sarah loved AR reading and tests!)

Sarah - Book-It (through Pizza Hut - Sarah read a certain amount of books each month of school to earn this award)
Sarah - Citizenship Award (Only 1 other student in her 1st grade section received this award. It is an award that goes to a person who is a good friend, hard worker and respectful to all. This is the award I am most proud of!)

It is a little more difficult to earn awards in 4th grade so I was quite happy with what Rachel achieved!

Rachel - 101.7 points in AR Reading (the 4th grade teacher requires 60 points for the year. I required her to get 100 if she wanted a Wii game. I guess I have to go shopping!)
Rachel - Book-It Award (Rachel had to read 20 min a day at home for 20 days each month to receive this award)

Rachel - Responsibility Award (Rachel was one of 3 students that handed in her signed assignment slips everyday. I think Mom and Dad should have gotten an award for getting on her every night to see the assingment slip. However, in the end it was her responsiblity to return it to her teacher so I guess she does deserve it)

Rachel - Stellar Speller Award (Only 1 student gets this award in the class. Rachel had the highest percentage of 100% spelling tests for the year in her class. Great job Rach!)

Okay - I'm done bragging!

Piano Recital

Sarah and Rachel had their Spring Piano Recital last Sunday. Each girl played two songs they had worked on over the past few months. They did a very nice job! They will be taking Summer Lessons every other week throughout the next 3 months in order to keep their skills sharp. Rachel will be in a competition on June 3 in Grand Forks. She will play her 2 Festival pieces where she earned her gold cup. Cash prizes are involved so you can imagine how excited she is. The only issue is that she is competing against children in her age group (not necessarily her level.) Her teacher hasn't entered anyone in the competition so we aren't sure what to expect. I just keep reminding her that she is doing this for experience not for the money (although, it would be great if she won!) Rachel, Mrs. Knott and Sarah after the recital.
Sarah is all ready to play her songs!

At least they like each other for a few minutes.

"Whew - I'm glad that's over with!"

Rachel after she was finished performing.

Spring Program

Once again, the J.A. Hughes Elementary Spring Program has come and gone. The girls did a great job and enjoyed performing. Rachel's program was entitled, "Project Peace." It was a show that promoted ways kids can make their school, community and world a more peaceful place. A variety of styles of music were included as well as a song that the kids performed entirely in sign language! The 4th - 6th Grade Choir also performed several songs including "Obwisana," "Peace Like a River/Kum Ba Yah," and "Footloose."

The 4th Grade class performing "Lay Down Your Arms" in sign language.

More actions!

Rachel speaking her part (she was the only one on stage - but no stage fright for this girl!)

Singing in the "J.A. Hughes Music Makers" Choir. Nice singing posture Rach!

Sarah was also in a spring program. "The Bear Went Over the Mountain" was the story of a bear who needed his friends' help and support to climb the mountain. She loved the rap song, "PUSH!" She played a little bunny for the show.

Sarah singing away!

She wasn't our little "Bear" tonight! More like our little "Thumper."

All ready for the show! Her pink nose was difficult to wash off so she went to school the next day "wearing" her nose.
